Monochromatic color schemes are a safe, classic, middle ground to a calming decor. Choosing paint colors can be a daunting experience with all the numerous choices to pick from. Mix it up too much and you create chaos and on the flip side, choosing everything in the same color can leave a dull boring decor. It is best if you can consult a color expert in your area to help pull it all together.
Working along the full spectrum of a single color is almost like playing with the whole paintbox. Monochrome design simply means exploring the gradations of a single hue. It rules out any contrast in color schemes. You can take any particular color you like, for example a blue, and paint your ceiling in the merest tint of blue in white paint, this mirrors hints of a blue sky. Powder blue walls would create a neutral background for a medium blue sofa and add in a navy for some occasional chairs. Viola! You have yourself a monochromatic color scheme in your decor.
You can also use elements of monochrome color schemes in a room without going the ‘whole enchilada’ – fully monochrome. For instance, you can tie together the accessories in a room by using a single color in many different shades. For example, you could decorate a living room with off-white walls and use many different hues of green in cushions, sofas and lampshades. This will help to unify the whole room.
Some helpful tips when decorating with a monochromatic color scheme:
1) Add texture whenever possible to add dimension and make each piece interesting and different.
2) Mix and match your patterns. Combine bold, large patterns married with petite and medium sized pattern.
3) The color cards supplied by paint supply stores are helpful in helping you to see lots of different hues of the same color side by side. Pick up some paint color cards for inspiration.
Hopefully you were inspired by this post. If you were to use a monochromatic color scheme would you go with a bold color, subtle color or a neutral?
