The reality of decorating a house can be much different to the decorating inspiration ideas we have. We all have an idea of how we would one day like our homes to look. We’re surrounded by home decor ideas our whole lives. But, when you have the blank canvas of your first home in front of you, it can be hard to know where to start. You may find that you’re unable to remember how you wanted your home to be in the first place. That’s why it’s important to turn to sources of decorating inspiration on your quest to transform your home. We all want to come up with that original idea. In truth, though, most innovative ideas are a result of decorating inspiration from different places. So, there’s no shame in getting ideas elsewhere! But, where should you look?
ONLINE
The internet is the biggest form of inspiration, so make the most of it. Sites like Pinterest are your best bet. With one simple search, you’ll find endless pages of decorating inspiration. Pinterest is particularly useful because it draws pages from many different sites. That saves you a job! It’s also worth searching Houzz and the websites of home style magazines. There’s no need to go out and buy them anymore. Most magazines have websites which offer free content and quality ideas and photos! Take some time, too, to find home design blogs like ours. These have some fantastic ideas that are easy to achieve.
TELEVISION
Television has always been a wonderful source of home inspiration. Keep your eyes open for ideas no matter what you’re watching. Television offers interesting insights into people’s homes and décor choices. If you want to know how to achieve those looks, watch home specific programs. Many home makeover shows will show you how to achieve the right look. Not to mention that they’re fantastic for inspiration! Just be sure to remember when you watch HGTV or other DIY shows that their budgets and labor costs are not always reality!
DISPLAY HOMES
If you want to go all out in your quest, it’s worth visiting display homes for ideas.
These are houses designed by professionals to look as appealing as possible. What better place to get your ideas? Show homes are houses that aren’t lived in, so bear in mind that they may seem a little stark. Even so, they can give you a good idea of how decor and layout can work together. Similarly, open houses in a model home is another good source. Keep in mind that the point of most model homes is to sell houses. Remember why you’re there!
FRIENDS
Taking inspiration from friends can be a little harder to manage, but it’s worth it. Remember that your friends will see what you’ve done. Don’t make it obvious that they were your decorating inspiration! Even so, it doesn’t hurt to take ideas and make them your own. Keep an eye out for anything you like when visiting friend’s houses. If you don’t mind them knowing, ask them where they got any wallpaper or furniture you like. If you don’t want them to know they inspired you, find a subtle way to get the information. Make the off the cuff remarks and see how much they’re willing to share!
