When designing a home, or just adjusting the home that you already have, many people choose to make their home greener. When a home is more environmentally friendly, it not only benefits the environment but can save you a heck of a lot of money. So making some green changes can really make a difference. So if you find that you are spending extortionate amounts on your home bills and want to be more conscious of the environment, then here are a few things that you could do around the home.
How good a home looks is all about the lighting. So it can be a hard decision to sacrifice the quality of the lighting that you have in your home. But one way to go green and not compromise on light quality is by changing your light bulbs to LED light bulbs. They use so much more energy than conventional light bulbs. But they don’t take a while to warm up like other energy saving light bulbs might. LED bulbs also last for quite a while too. So they are a good choice in a number of ways. Yay for cutting down costs.
Save Water
If you find that your water bills go up and up, then designing your home to be environmentally friendly and save money is a good idea. One of the things that could be installed in the backyard is a water barrel. It can save up rain water, to use in your garden instead of a hose or sprinkler. But inside the home, there are changes that could be made too. You could look for the best undercounter water filter, for example. Not only would it mean that it is hidden away, but certain ones can help to reduce water waste. As it can be filtered and used for the laundry or flushing a toilet.
Use Timers
Depending on where you live, you might find that you are dependent on your air conditioning unit to get through the day, or perhaps your heater! Both of these things can cost a lot of money to run. Not only does that cost you money, but it can be bad for the environment when you use up so much energy and electricity. So one way to control it in your home is to get timers. Then you can set when the air comes on or when the heating kicks in. You don’t just want to leave either on all day as it is such a waste.
Rethink Soft Furnishings
There are several things in your home that can make your home warmer, or even cooler. So if you live in an area that it hot in spring and summer, is a leather couch really the best thing to have? The same goes for things like carpets and heavy curtains. You should design your home with the kind of weather you encounter. Or at least change things up seasonally, if you experience a little bit of everything.
I’d love to hear what you do to cut down home bills! Until next time, happy decorating!
