If you’re planning a bit of work on the house, the bathroom is one area that you definitely shouldn’t neglect. It often gets overlooked because you won’t spend that much time in there, but a beautiful bathroom will really impress anybody that comes to visit. Whether you are after a more traditional style, or you prefer something a bit more modern, there are a few bathroom trends to be aware of. It’s all good and well spending lots of time and money on doing up your bathroom, but you’ll end up looking silly if the style you go for is completely out of fashion. To help you avoid embarrassment, we’ve put together a quick list of some of the biggest trends in bathroom design for this year.
Period Bathrooms
This one is perfect for the traditionalists out there. The popularity of period dramas over the last few years has led to increased demand for bathroom designs that emulate the main features of some of these more traditional rooms. The most common ones at the moment are Edwardian and Victorian designs, but some people have been going a bit more recent and using art-deco as the backdrop for their bathroom.
While you might want to capture the essence of a Victorian bathroom, you don’t want to go too far. You’ll still want to put in some modern luxuries like a good shower. Otherwise your bathroom won’t actually be enjoyable to use.
If you are willing to put the time in, the best way to get the most authentic result is to use original fixtures and restore them. A lot of designers are using real Victorian bathtubs and basins that they have managed to find, to really top off the look.
Gloss
If the traditional look isn’t to your tastes, then you should go for something a bit more up to date. One of the more popular modern techniques is to use a lot of gloss in the bathroom. With plenty of focus on glossy ceramics and lots of glass and mirrors, this is one that is best suited to a smaller bathroom. The reflective surfaces really open up space, throw in a few designer radiators and you’ll turn your tiny bathroom into something very impressive.
When you’re tiling, pick the shiniest ones that you can find, and go for larger ones, giving you more surface and less grout. That way you can maximize their effect.
Natural Look
The final design on the list is the natural one. This is perhaps one of the most versatile ones, and it is always fairly fashionable so you don’t need to worry about going out of style. The key feature of a natural look bathroom is stone. There are some wonderful stone basins available, and if you couple them with some good quality wooden floors, it will really complete the look.
You do need to be careful with stone baths, as they are much heavier than a standard ceramic one. It isn’t usually a problem, but check that the floors in your bathroom will take the weight if it’s upstairs.
