When you think about the kitchen, it’s the one room in the house that tends to limit creativity. First and foremost, a kitchen has to be practical so many people don’t think about alternative kitchen design ideas for that space. However, there are lots of ways you can express yourself through your kitchen design without affecting the practicality. And, you could even make it more of a space that the family actually want to spend time in. So, what are your options?
Get Rid of Uniformity
We’re forever seeing kitchens with straight lines and everything stacked up neatly against the walls. If you have a decent amount of space in your kitchen, don’t be afraid to use it. Think curved edges instead of uniformity throughout the kitchen. Do sofas belong in the kitchen? Of course they do, if you can make use of them there. The only way you’ll get a truly unique kitchen is if you’re willing to think outside the box.
Mixed Materials
The one great thing about kitchens is that it’s always been perfectly acceptable to mix your materials when renovating a kitchen. You may have wood cabinets with a granite countertop and stainless-steel sink. In a kitchen, they all come together and work harmoniously. So, roll with it. Creating an alternative kitchen doesn’t mean you have to carefully think about which materials match which. It’s okay to have something that sticks out as your focal point because it doesn’t match anything else.
Concrete
When you think of concrete, it doesn’t exactly scream elegance. But, there’s a beauty in concrete when it’s used in the right way. Concrete countertops for your kitchen is one of the best ways to keep an air of luxury while doing something alternative and edgy in your design. It can be difficult to visualize, but the finished result is breathtaking. Paired with a medium colored wood, like oak, it’s a kitchen design that will stand the test of time.
Lighting
Lighting doesn’t have to boring in a kitchen. If you’re looking for some alternative lighting ideas, why not consider adding a few new electrical points so you can hang lighting at different heights throughout the room. It works well hovering over a dinner table or kitchen island. You’ll also have plenty of choice when it comes to light shades. You could go for a copper look, white lanterns or even leave the bulbs fully exposed for that touch more edge.
Abstract
Who says your kitchen counters have to be flat and straight? What about having layered surfaces that hover above each other? When it comes to designing an alternative kitchen, think abstract. Your kitchen island doesn’t have to be square or rectangular. It could be circular or perhaps a triangular island is what you’re looking for. The point is, if you can visualize it, someone can make it.
Don’t let designing your kitchen be boring. Hire a professional interior designer in your area to help create a functional space that has some originality to it. A kitchen has the potential to be a space that everyone enjoys, and if you’re willing to step outside of the norm, you could create an alternative kitchen design that is something truly spectacular.
