A Personal Decorating Style doesn’t have to be hard to create. In fact, it’s rather easy to do if you really think about it. We are all familiar with the old saying: home is where the heart is. Now, this can ring true for a multitude of reasons. First of all, it’s where our loved ones tend to be. This is a given. Whether that’s a partner, kids, or pets. The joy that these individuals bring to our lives is incomparable, so of course, our heart is going to rest wherever they rest their heads at night.
Next, it is where our belongings are. If we take material goods in their own right out of the equation, we are left with sentimental belongings. The things that bring a smile to our face on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Photo albums, childhood teddy bears… things that fill us with a sense of nostalgia and longing for days gone by. These are all things that make home particularly special to us, and they aren’t all too malleable.
However, the third reason that home is where the heart is can be worked upon and improved: personal decorating style. Our home is a reflection of our personality, our interests, an outward projection of our soul. We design it based on our interests and aesthetic preferences. Decorating around practicality so that we can undertake daily tasks and our hobbies more easily. It is this third category that we can always work on.
So many properties nowadays are essentially carbon copies, with many of our homes sharing the same artwork on the walls, pieces of furniture or bedding from mass manufacturers and light fittings we saw in a glossy magazine or on Pinterest. We need to be more individual and take our own direction rather than following the crowd. So, here are a few ways to ensure that your house truly shines as a reflection of our personality, decorating style and character. Here are a few areas to focus on to give our property a truly personal touch!

Textiles
Going with textiles is a brilliant way to add a personal touch to any room in your home. Think about it. Most of us settle for the first blackout curtains we happen to see online or in the store. On line bedding and random scatter cushions will look piece-meal when you put them in your home. But these are all things that are so important to have done correctly!
Rather than spending hours trawling housewares stores for curtains, bedding and cushions in the perfect shade that you’ve envisioned in your mind, why not go with custom window treatments, bedding, even upholstery and pillows? Not only will your interiors be truly unique, but you will gain the satisfaction of knowing that you have a one of a kind special piece. You can also ensure that the final product is exactly what you want it to be in terms of color, pattern, fabric, and size. So, if you do nothing else to put your personal decorating style in your home you should at least invest marvelous custom textiles!
Refrigerator Pinboard
Refrigerator magnets exist for a reason. Start to see your fridge as a big blank canvas where you can display a few of your favorite photos. There are all sorts of magnets out there, so you don’t have to stick with dull ones. If you have a flair for writing, opt for letter or word magnets that will help you to craft a tale around your photos. If you have a case of wanderlust, pick up souvenir magnets from all of the places you’ve traveled. This way your refrigerator will tell a tale of your life as well as serving a functional purpose! Just be aware, too much will look cluttered and messy, so keep it to a minimum at most.

Adventurous Color Schemes
If you walk into a friend’s home, you can almost guarantee that their walls are going to be white, beige, magnolia, or some other bland and non-offensive color. This makes sense. It’s simple. It’s easy. It won’t draw too much attention to itself. However, unless you’re a fairly vanilla person yourself, this kind of color scheme won’t say much about your personality at all.
So why not be brave and mix things up a bit? While you don’t have to go all out and paint your entire property your favorite color, you may want to consider doing a feature wall in one or two rooms. Alternatively, you could paint the stairs or smaller rooms a more daring and eye-catching tone. If you’re more fickle, you could add brighter accents or features to each room. Cushions, throws and rugs are a good idea, as they can be more easily changed if you change your mind in regards to the color scheme later on.
These are just a couple of areas to focus your efforts on. As you gain confidence in expressing your true self through your property, you’ll get more and more comfortable making further, larger changes as time goes on. As always I recommend you hire a local professional interior designer to help you pull it all together so it doesn’t end up looking like a mish-mash.
