If you’ve got kids or pets and are constantly battling with stains, it could be time to make a few changes to your décor. Here are just a few stain-proof solutions worth adding to your home.
Laminate your wooden floors
Laminating wood makes it more scratch-proof and stain-proof. If you have old floorboards, it could be worth adding a sealant. Many modern floor solutions come pre-laminated. This type of flooring may not be suited to bathrooms as moisture can damage and warp laminated wood. Today they offer many tiles that have the wood look to them.
Keep ceramic tiles sealed
Like wood, ceramic tiling needs to be sealed to protect it from stains. This is a job that can be easily DIYed with a rag and some sealer. There are lots of sealers on the market – it’s worth going into a store and getting suggestion from a professional.
Choose carpet tiles
Carpets are much harder to protect against stains. Polypropylene carpets are easier to scrub but still not entirely stain-proof, while darker colors can be good for masking stains. Often the best solution is to opt for a carpet tile floor. The beauty of carpet tiles is that you can cheaply replace one tile which has been stained rather than having to pay for a new floor.
Use high-gloss paint on walls
You’ll often find high-gloss paint in nurseries and schools and for good reason. As well as reflecting more light and making a room appear brighter, this types of paint is much easier to scrub marks off of due to its VOC level. Consider adding a coat of this to your walls – it could limit the amount of elbow grease you put into scrubbing off scuff marks and felt tip pen marks.
Choose dark leather upholstery
When it comes to sofas and armchairs, the best material for deterring stains is dark leather. Leather is naturally easy-to-wipe, however light leather can still stain. By choosing dark leather, you can easily clean up spillages whilst also hiding any long term effects. Avoid materials such as linen and silk which stain easily.
Buy stain proof seat protectors
An alternative to buying new upholstery could be to buy seat protectors. Many of these can be easily wiped or even put in the washing machine to get rid of stains. You can get seat protectors for couches and for dining room chairs.
Opt for quartz counter tops
When it comes to kitchen counter tops, one of the toughest materials against stains is quartz. This natural stone is expensive, but is worth the high price tag as it is stain resistant and scratch resistant. This is not the case with a luxury counter top material such as marble which is notorious for staining. There are several plastic counter top materials on the market that are equally stain resistant, but may not provide the same aesthetic quality. You can also opt for man made counter tops.
