It’s one thing decorating our homes to make them look beautiful. However, to keep them at their best we need to ensure they’re regularly cleaned and tidied too. While most of the time we can get away with a few basic chores to keep on top of things, every spring it’s worth going in and doing a really thorough deep clean. In addition, once or twice a year you can tackle the jobs that either get missed or don’t need doing on a regular basis. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to clean. With the sun out we’re all far more motivated. So let’s get our homes up to snuff. Here are some important steps of Spring cleaning you don’t want to miss!
Carpets
Carpets are traps for dust, bacteria, pollutants, allergens and all kinds of nasties. You probably don’t want to know this but the average carpet has traces of animal feces, vomit and dead insects among other things. This isn’t just ‘unclean’ houses. Even if you pride yourself on a lovely home, coming in with shoes on can traipse all kinds of things into your carpets which aren’t entirely cleaned with vacuuming. For this reason, it’s worth cleaning your carpets at least once a year. You could call up some carpet cleaners and have professionals do the job, or you could buy or rent a carpet cleaner to use yourself. Empty each room of furniture and carefully go over every square inch for the best result. It will bring your carpets back up to their best, and give you peace of mind that germs and other unpleasant things lurking are completely removed!
Soft Furnishings
Perhaps you wash your bedding on a weekly basis, but what about your other soft furnishings? Cushion covers on the sofa, decorative throws and curtains are all things that can get dirty too. Read the instructions and machine wash what you can, otherwise soak them in a bath of cold water and detergent overnight. This will lift out any marks and stains without damaging the fabric. Curtains should be vacuumed with a clean attachment at least twice a year. Never wash window treatments and don’t put them in the dryer since this can shrink them. The last thing you want is to re-hang them, and they’re an inch or two too short! While you’re cleaning curtains, give the windows and sills a thorough clean. Condensation can cause mold, and pollution and debris can cause windows to look dirty. Have a window cleaner come out and do the outsides if you’re not good with heights.

Closets
Spring cleaning isn’t just a chance to deep clean but de-clutter too. And with most people, the closet is one area that needs some serious work. When you’re buying new things all the time, you can end up with far too many pieces. Every now and again it’s good to be brutal. Go through and get rid of anything you’ll you haven’t or will never wear. With the warmer weather on the way, it’s time to put your winter clothes into storage too- coats, boots, scarves and hats. This gives you space to hang your more summer pieces which means you’re not constantly digging through items that you’re not going to wear again til later in the year.
