We’ve all been there, have you had the moment when renovating your home that you uncover a load of dust, and you have a sneezing fit that lasts all day? It’s annoying, isn’t it? But this is something that is belying of a far bigger problem in everybody’s home, the idea of allergies. Do you think you are actually allergic to your home in some way? It’s not that far-fetched! But there are things you can do if you’ve got certain structural problems with your home, so let’s fix them!
Fix The Bedroom
Dust is the big problem in many bedrooms, especially under the bed. Make sure that you do a deep clean every so often, but also look at your bed mattress. Cover your mattress and pillows with zip on dust mite covers, and this is going to have a better impact on your sleep, especially if you are asthmatic.
Changing Your Air Filter

Remove The Carpets
While hardwood flooring is all the rage now, it’s very practical if you’ve got allergies. Replacing all the wall to wall carpeting and padding with hardwood will minimize the allergens in the air. Every time you walk across a carpet, these allergens are chucked back into the air.
Examine Every Corner
Do you do a superficial cleaning of your home, or do you really go to town on every nook and cranny every single time? You need to look for prime spots where there could be potential for allergens and irritants. Under the sink is the first port of call!
Check For Mold
If you’ve got a room with lots of moisture in the air, like the bathroom, this is where mold loves to thrive! You need to make sure that you clean moldy areas regularly, but also ensure that every room in the house is well ventilated, but you need to recaulk sinks, bathtubs and tiles to prevent mold growth. With over 100,000 species of mold, you need to catch them all.
Lay Down Two Mats
One of the big culprits is people bringing in allergens from the outside. If you’ve got kids bringing in all manner of dirt, lay down two mats, one outside the house and one inside the front door. Or, just take your shoes off! And if you’ve got pets, limit their entering and leaving to one door, preferably somewhere far away from the rest of the house, such as the kitchen, or a place where they are easy to clean if they do track in lots of dirt!
There are so many ways you could be allergic to your home, so it’s time to fix these problems!
