Whether you are trying to sell you house, or you just want it to look like a spread from Homes and Gardens, home staging can be a valuable skill. But what is home staging and how can we do it to make our own houses look better? Keep reading to find out.
What is home staging?
Home staging is a way of maximizing the look of your home’s interior. It is a mix of little tips and tricks to make your home look comfortable, organized and stylish, in an effortless way.
Tip 1: Clutter is a no-no
Getting rid of clutter is probably the most well know of all home staging tips. Everyone knows that too many items in a room can make it seem small and pokey, which is exactly the look most people are trying to avoid. But how can we apply this clutter cleaning theory to our own homes?
Well, take a long around the room that you area staging, is there anything in it that isn’t there because it is decorative? Then it needs to go. So many people end up storing things in a room, and then get so used to seeing them, they just become a part of the landscape. But they won’t appear like this to everyone else.
So remove the vacuum that is standing in the corner. Get rid of the exercise bike that you use to hang your clothes on, and rid the room of storage boxes that are not an integral part of the furniture.
Tip 2: Do not neglect the humble coffee table
In a living area a coffee table can provide an excellent opportunity for a focal point, so don’t waste this. Make it as dramatic as possible with cut flowers, or chic coffee table books. Have a place to store away coasters when they are not in use too. Remember the idea is to create a point of interest, so don’t over clutter this space either.
Tip 3: Bring the outside inside
A classic trick in room staging is the use of fresh plants and flowers to add dimension and interest. Before installing any botanicals in your space, you need to think carefully about the practicality of the situation.
Large spaces can easy hold leafy green plants like palms and yuccas. Smaller space may benefit from cut roses and orchids. To make it simple for yourself why not use a service like orchids every month? Then you know that you will always have a supply of fresh plants with which to adorn your space.
Tip 4: Rule of three
When Coco Chanel was alive, she used to stay that before they leave the house women should look in the mirror and remove one accessory. It’s is kind of the same with home accessories. We already know that clutter is to be avoided, but that doesn’t mean bare shelves and sides.
Instead, try the rule of three. Which is that there should be no more than three ornaments in one space at any one time. They should also be arranged in an interesting way, and you can group them by a unifying factor too like color, design or material.
