Trying to keep up with modern style can feel a lot like trying to outrun the rising sun. It’s continually evolving and changing. Sometimes the changes may be simple. Such as, moving from dark walls to light walls, while others change out dark wood cabinets to bright white ones. If you’re lost and confused about what’s coming next, don’t worry! Nobody knows what will be in style next. As long as your kitchen is within ten years of the update, you’re not outdated. If you want to ride on the razor-thin edge of what’s fashionable, here are eight reasons why home design trends change every year.
There Are Endless Possibilities
There’s no end in the number of different desks, tables, and couches that exist. Lovesac used to be a trendy couch, and once again, it’s making a comeback. However, not all furniture can hold its own. Because of the infinite designs, brands, and color choices, there’s no chance that anyone has an up to date home. Whether their counter has been out of style for a couple of years, or their tile backsplash looks like the styles from 2008- no house can fight against the odds and be everything.
Public Opinion on What’s Important Changes
Although the style is essential, how things are made also matter. Public opinion on what’s necessary for Earth and human-friendly matters change from year to year. It used to be that anything wood was considered acceptable. From there things moved to metal, and now many people seem to want a detailed history of the piece. Such as, info from where the tree that was used, was grown, to how it was transported to them. It’s good to be eco-conscious, our planet does need help, but this is part of what changes home design trends.
Advertising Changes
Unfortunately, advertising sways us more than we’d like to think. Pushing us to believe we need certain brands. For example, Kitchenaid has cornered the market on stand mixers. Telling us our expensive appliances are outdated merely because of their color. Advertising works hard to sell us the fantasy of a home that doesn’t exist. Telling us our homes are incomplete or dated if we’re not using their newest product. It shapes public opinion more than anything else on this list.
Materials Become More Available
As we continue to use resources, they become more readily available and affordable. This ensures that more people can get their hands on certain textiles or objects. It’s more notable in the homes that don’t have it yet. Quartz used to be too expensive for most people to have in their homes,. Especially, as a continuous piece since slabs used to be 50 inches on average. Thanks to new technology, and more access, quartz is more affordable. Most homebuyers seek it out when looking at houses.
Companies Put Out New Lines
Like fashion in clothing, style in design is a chameleon of change. Companies know that to make more money, they have to keep changing, renovating and updating their products. This process can mean that a company puts out a new washer and dryer or fridge every year and suddenly you feel like you have to own it. You haven’t failed, though; they’re just trying to make their bottom line and sell you through advertising. These constant new lines have inspired a culture of wastefulness and going through appliances like potato chips.
Taste Is Made By Television
Channels like HGTV bring in millions of viewers every day and show what an updated home should look like. Viewers get a peek into other people’s kitchens and get to judge as they make strange design choices. Or perhaps, watch with envy as someone gets the home of their dreams. This channel shows people what’s in style at all times. If you weren’t sure what kind of cabinets mattered before you turned it on, you’d turn it off, realizing that you desperately need white, no-handle cabinets.
Changes May Seem Small, But…
Even if parts of the home change slowly over time, those changes add up over time. It may be hard to tell the difference between a pristine 2021 bathroom and a clean 2016 bathroom. However the changes between 2021 and 2000 are glaringly obvious. Style evolves overtime at its own pace .It isn’t easy to try and pigeonhole one look and hope that it will be timeless.
Even timeless looks get updated.
This decision is a war that’s been going back and forth since humans started designing things. Should your items be beautiful, or should they be comfortable? Some items offer both, but most people feel like we have to choose between the two. Every five years or so, the styles bounce back and forth between the warmth and clutter of kitschy homes, to the cold and futuristic designs of minimalism. With these, pick the style that suits you and stick with it. There’s no point in bouncing between the two every time, especially since the classes have two very different buying habits.
You’ll end up broke and overwhelmed with a revolving door of home design trends should you try to keep up with the changing styles. It’s essential to pick furniture and appliances that will show off your home. You want things that you’ll be proud of without having to replace them every year. After all, how are you supposed to enjoy your home if you have to update it continually?
