Today we are going to focus on a detail that is not necessarily small but one that is often overlooked. One that when used in the right way can create a real sense of luxury. We are going to be talking skirting boards, and more specifically – oak skirting boards.
Skirting Board Material
Skirting boards come in all shapes, sizes and styles. They are made from many different types of materials. However, most commonly skirting and architrave is made from MDF, Pine and Oak. It also can be manufactured using many different types of wood.
Functional and Stylish
Generally speaking, skirting boards are a practical necessity for the modern family home, thanks to their robust and protective nature. That doesn’t mean that they can’t be stylish. Focus on their primary use, as a protective layer to your lower walls, while considering how they can add to the interior design of a room. We can use skirting to kill two birds with one stone.
Oak skirting boards in particular are perfect in terms of design and protection. Wood may cost a little more than MDF but it will stand the test of time. Oak can be primed, treated, painted or even left in its natural state.
Color of Skirting Board
Many contemporary home owners shy away from oak due to the color. This superior wood can be painted in any color you like. That is where we think the biggest gains can be had in terms of impact on luxury interior design. Do not hide your skirting boards.. Instead, utilize them to bring out accent colors or contrast with the other colors in your space. All of this can be done with oak.
If you have a traditional home then the natural oak colors will work perfectly. You can simply stain the wood to match any existing wood you have. If you have a space that needs a little more character such as a study or library, this would be a perfect detail.
Benefits of Oak Skirting Boards
The added benefit of using oak is that the lifespan of the product is going to be so much greater than pine or MDF. You can kick it, scuff it, bash it and it will cope just fine. Consider adding grooves and using different styles to match your space. Straight lines and square edges work great in modern spaces whereas more chambered and intricate detailing tends to work better in more traditional spaces. Whatever you do, just make sure your skirting is not an after thought. Plan it in to your design from the get go.
