Being honest really is the best policy most times, and often when we share tips on interior design it can look simple. The truth is, it can take a lot of hard work to get your home exactly how you want it to be and that is just the decorating reality of interior design. You will always have an expectation of what you think it will be like but the reality can be somewhat different. It isn’t always bad, and some renovation projects or interior changes can go smooth sailing. But in the majority of cases, it can end up as a disaster, which is why I thought it would be fun to share with you some of the most common expectations and the reality and truth behind it. Maybe it will help you be a little more realistic with your design choices in the future.
The big expectation of choosing paint colors is that too many times we can be drawn to how it appears on the can or paint swatch. That color swatch is a guide, and you will only truly know how something will look by physically testing it out on the wall. The reality of choosing a paint color is that you have the idea of a color, but it just doesn’t seem to exist or doesn’t paint on the wall exactly how you imagined it to be. Choosing paint colors is a surprisingly harder decision to make than we really give it credit for, so make sure you take the time to test those swatches out on the wall.
Will your marriage or partnership survive?
The conversation may start innocently, you both decide you are going to redecorate the living room. You imagine that you will both be there, rollers in hand and end up with a picture perfect room come the end of the weekend. The reality is that you will have argued countless times over the silliest or minute things. Decorating can ruin relationships. Joking aside, expect some disagreements and arguments, but come the end of the project it will all have been worth it, right?
Flooring is tricky
Just like wall colors can be confusing, choosing flooring can equally be as hard because these days it isn’t just a plain simple choice. There are many options to consider. If it isn’t a choice between carpet and wooden flooring, then it’s the choice between the type of tile you go for. A professional interior decorator like All About Interiors, can easily assist you with these dilemmas.
How will your furnish your home?
The expectation of furnishings is purely based on what you envision in your mind, but the reality is that furnishings can be getting the right layout for a room is far trickier than we would believe, who knew? Space planning is not too complicated if you have the help of a designer to make sure your furnishings are to scale for the space. They will also check for ample walking space between furniture. You don’t want overcrowdedness.
Will you find the right accessories to match that Pinterest image you have?
Accessories are just as difficult to navigate. You expect it to be easy. You find the right vase or silk flower arrangement, but the reality may be that it just doesn’t quite work in the spot you thought. Or the arrangement just doesn’t cut it. Pinterest has it looking so easy but really, there is a specific science to decorating. Placing items around the room haphazardly isn’t the solution.
On the subject of Pinterest
Finally, on the subject of Pinterest, and or Houzz, the expectation is that we can recreate each and every look or design. The reality is that those pictures are staged to look at their best. Most of the time designed by some designer. Make sure you cut yourself some slack and make the home right for you and not just your Pinterest board. And for goodness sake, hire someone who can help you put your vision together without it becoming a mish mash of random décor.
