Flip through an interiors magazine, and you will soon be overloaded with to-die-for interiors. It’s the same with Instagram. Light, wonderful spaces with clean lines. Everything is where it should be. From the big necessities like the fridge to kids toys stored in perfect storage boxes. They look like show homes. How can anyone possibly live in them? They have the function, fashion and style we long for in interiors.
Well, they don’t. You probably already knew that, though it’s a little harder to remind yourself of it when looking on social media. To make it look like a perfect desk they had to scrub off an old coffee ring and sweep papers into a drawer.
Some of the things that we need in life are not going to be aesthetically pleasing. It’s annoying, isn’t it? The TV is always going to look like a TV rather than a beautiful piece of wall art. Even the more valuable details in your home, such as a top-of-the-range cooker or massage chair, have a functional feel.
You know, with your reasonable head on, that there is a reason for this. “It doesn’t have to look perfect and wonderful,” you tell yourself through gritted teeth, “it just has to work.”
Still. Nothing ruins your decor options more than having to incorporate bulky items due to need over style, does it? There has got to be a way to mimic the perfect, show home feel without making your house impossible to live in!
- Become A Mistress of Disguise
If it can go in a storage box, put it in a storage box. For anything larger, try beautiful fabric draped over it when it’s not in use. Or hide it behind something larger.
- Change What You Can
So, for example, a computer chair can’t be highly-styled, as you actually have to sit in it. You bought it with words like “lumbar support” in mind; function before fashion. But you can still improve it. You can have it reupholstered in a more pleasing fabric. Swap out the castors for a more on-trend metal, such as rose gold. You’ll still get the support you need from a long day in the office. As a bonus, it won’t make you wince from its sheer industrial-feel.
- Utilize Your Storage Space
You can set up cabinets for storage of unwieldy kitchen items like the blender for instance. You may have to sacrifice garage or basement space. It means a trip into the garage or basement when you want to use it. It’s up to you if you consider that worth it.
- Stick Something To It
Wall decor stickers and washi tape can be used as a last resort. This might make an appliance fit in better with your general decor. If you have an unsightly broom out and not stored, decorate the handle with a cute washi tape. It’s now a cute a decorative piece. Be careful with this, though, as done incorrectly, such as this ribbon, it can look extremely tacky. Stick with simple patterns like stripes and polka dots. Anything you do add, should always be applied using a ruler, too.
So while you have to give some of your home interior dreams over to function, the above should help you make peace with it!
