No one wants a dark and dingy home. Not only will it feel very claustrophobic, but all those shadows could get you very down in the dumps! The good news is that you don’t have to leave your rooms this dark as there are lots of tips you can use to increase light and brighten things up! Here are some of my favorite ideas that can really help you make your dark rooms a lot brighter.
Use Lots Of Mirrors
Mirrors not only reflect our image, but they also reflect a lot of light. If you place your mirrors strategically, you could find that you are able to double the amount of sunlight in your room! One of the best positions is right opposite your windows. The sunlight will shine onto the mirror surface and bounce off, lighting up the whole room. You will also find that placing lots of mirrors up a flight of stairs can really illuminate the staircase. You can also use a garden mirror, which is a unique addition to the garden and can make it look bigger and add to its character.
Change Your Windows
Bad windows can be very bad for a room’s décor as they will let through minimal light. If the windows in a room are filled with translucent or patterned glass, they will really struggle to let through any light at all. Ideally, you should replace them with windows that contain clear glass. One nice idea is to get some custom windows that are designed with your room in mind. If you speak to your local window specialist, they should be able to design and create some windows that can help to enhance the brightness of your rooms. Also, to draw your eye towards the light, you may want to add some eye-catching custom window treatments from All About Interiors.
Trim Trees
If there is something blocking your windows, then there is no way any natural light will be able to make it into your room. One of the most common things standing between all the sunlight and your room is a tree! If there are some trees in your garden that cover all or part of a window, you should trim them back. If they are in your neighbor’s garden, then you will need to get their permission first.
Add To All That Sunshine
You don’t have to rely on sunshine alone to brighten up a room. It’s also possible to supplement it with some well-placed lamps and lights. If you place some lights that shine upwards against a wall, you will see that it greatly enhances the room’s light as it starts to get dark outside.
Cut Down On Dark Furniture
If you keep your room’s décor light and bright, then it will really boost the overall feeling of light in the room. As well as reducing the number of dark furniture items, you should try and limit bulky items. That’s because these can add weight to a room, which can make it feel a lot darker than what it actually is.
There are plenty of ways you can brighten your dark rooms; these are just a pick of some of the best ideas. Of course, whichever ones you decide to go with will probably depend on the overall style and size of your home.
Lighting is a science and there are many layers of light that need to be considered, but that is another entire post.
