Choose the Wall Color Last
When you are redesigning a room, many people will choose the paint or wall color, before anything else. It is easy to understand why they might do that. But it doesn’t make the most sense. Paint or wallpaper is relatively inexpensive compared to furniture. Unless you plan on replacing all of your furniture, then you want to work the style of the room around what you already have. So think of the furniture you have, and then the accessories that you want. Then the wall color should be the final part. Colors vary so much depending on natural and unnatural light too. So if you are moving to a new home, you want to know what the natural light in the room is like, before you get the paintbrush out.
Keep Furniture Uncluttered
Many of us make the mistake of over cluttering a room with furniture. It is important to give your furniture a bit of room. Less is definitely more! So spend your time looking for fewer, high-quality solid wood furniture pieces, rather than just lots of cheaper finds. The room will look so much better. It is more calming to be in a room like that too. You want to physically and mentally be able to maneuver with ease around a room.
Don’t Hang Wall Art High Up
If you think about the art galleries of the world, where are the pictures on the wall? They are all along the middle of the room. You want the artwork to be at eye level, rather than just fitting to the structure of the room. The wall art is there to be seen and admired, by you and any guests. It is difficult to do that when it is much higher than eye level. The same goes for mounting a TV to the wall. Don’t put it in the middle of the wall, if it is a room with a high ceiling. Instead, measure out the correct, eye-level height for it. It will make the room look better and function much better.
Create a Focal Point in the Room
In design, you need to think about creating a focal point in the room. Something to have the eye focus on. So when you start to decorate, decide what that will be. It could be a chandelier or pendant light, a decorative wall or ceiling, fireplace or a headboard. You want the other items in the room to then take a bit of a secondary role. Let the focal point piece take the lead!
Use Layers of Lighting
It can be easy to layer up lighting in somewhere like a kitchen. You can have level lighting for the counter tops, as well as the main lights. The extractor hood might have some separate lighting too. But where else in the home could you layer up lighting? Think about spotlights to emphasize certain photographs or wall art. Ambient lighting from sconces will set the mood. You could also get some lights for the inside of closets, bookshelves or just shelving, for example. When you build up these layers of light, it makes the room more interesting. It makes the room have variety and makes certain pieces stand out. So if you have a certain focal point, think about making it pop with some extra lighting.
Show Your Personality
One of the most important points when it comes to interior design is to show your personality. You want to make a bit of a statement, and most importantly, have some fun with it. The more that you try out different things, the more you will decide what you do and don’t like. The more you will see what does and doesn’t work too. So even if some pieces that you love wouldn’t conventionally sit together, give it a try! Mix up modern and classic, but keep it simple at the same time. Just let your personality shine throughout your home. It will show and make such a difference.
Although these tips of the trade will get you started in the right direction, it is always wise to hire a professional interior designer to make sure you are doing it correctly. Contact us for a consultation.
